?>Client British Waterways Board
Date 1999
The reopening of the Standedge Tunnel was a major British Waterways Board project. Arrol & Snell acted as Consultant Architect for the design of the tunnel facilities building, which provides a combined tunnel trip, exhibition and office accommodation inside the converted warehouse.
Proposals involved analysing and developing the client’s requirements for a functional office space that served the British Waterways Board, the Local Authority and the National Trust. A visitor and education centre was also incorporated into the design.
The nearby canal side, lock keeper’s cottages were converted to catering facilities. The practice’s work included assistance with the Business and Audience Development Plans for all the visitor facilities.
