The Trotting Horse

The Trotting Horse was one of Arrol Architects’s first projects following the practice’s formation in 1980. The client commissioned the practice to restore and renovate a number of properties within the historic town of Shrewsbury, many of which included significantly important half-timbered buildings.

The Trotting Horse was, and still is, a public house set down an alleyway off one of the town’s most architecturally important streets, Wyle Cop.

The renovation of Trotting Horse is a good example of the practice’s desire to understand the archaeology of each building and thus to not only conserve what exists of the historic fabric, but also to restore significant elements that may have been lost over time – such as the projecting or jettied elevation in the exterior photograph shown here.
